At UH-Manoa, November 21
by Ruth Mabanglo
The UH Filipino and Philippine Literature
Program announces the coming of Marjorie Evasco and Charlson
Ong, poet and fictionist respectively, for a literary reading
titled Reading Filipino Back to Back on November 21.
Currently fellows at the Iowa International
Writing Program, Evasco and Ong have been in the United States
since August this year.
The Iowa International Writing Program
at Iowa is one of the most prestigious writing programs funded
by the International Visitors Program. It invites writers from
different countries to meet American writers and see the United
States. It also supports the heritage community of the visiting
writers by giving them the opportunity to speak or discuss issues
with them.
Last November 7, the University of California
at Berkeley and the Filipino community invited Evasco and Ong
to be part of a series of discussion and reading called Writing
and the Filipino Nation.
Evasco is the recipient of the Philippines
1987 and 1999 National Book Awards for Poetry. Her books include
Dreamweavers: Selected Poems 1976-1986; Ocher Tones: Poems in
English and Cebuano; and A Life Shaped by Music. Evasco is a
professor of literature and director of the Bienvenido N. Santos
Creative Writing and Research Center at De La Salle University.
A professor of literature at the University
of the Philippines Department of English and Comparative Literature,
Ong is author of four books. These include three books of short
stories (Men of the East and Other Stories, Woman of Am-Kaw
and Other Stories, Conversion and Other Fiction) and one novel
(Embarrassment of Riches).
The readings of this literary duo will
take place at the University of Hawaii-Manoa Tokioka Room (Moore
319)
at 3 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
The sponsors of this event include the UH Filipino and Philippine
Literature Program, Department of Hawaiian
and Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures, Department
of English, Department of Ethnic Studies, Center for Philippine
Studies, Asian Studies (SHAPS), Philippine Consulate General,
Womens Center, Katipunan,
